Why Should I Dilute My Essential Oils?

Essential oils can have some powerful benefits but they’re also very strong and a little definitely goes a long way! Because they’re so potent, getting clued up on carrier oils is super important.

Carrier oils are super effective at making essential oils less potent, without affecting their therapeutic benefits. Some essential oils can be hugely irritating if you don’t use a carrier oil, especially if you have sensitive skin. Others can even be dangerous to use “neat”.

Diluting your essential oils with a carrier oil stops them from evaporating as quickly and helps them to last longer.

Popular carrier oils include jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil, olive oil and avocado oil. A lot of these carrier oils are hydrating and nourishing and can give your skin a boost into the bargain!

Although most carrier oils don’t have a strong smell, they can potentially alter the scent of your essential oils. Sweet almond oil has a slightly nutty scent, for example. Something to bear in mind when you’re choosing which carrier oil to use with some essential oils!

When you’re buying carrier oils, look for ones that are 100% pure and free from preservatives and additives.

How much should you use? A 2% dilution of 1 drop of carrier oil per 2 drops of essential oil works well for most adults. This can be dropped down to 1 drop of carrier oil per 1 drop of essential oil if you’re pregnant.

Until next time!
