Why Certification Still Matters in Natural Hair and Braiding

There’s a common myth in the natural hair/braid industry that certification or licensing doesn’t matter. That belief is costing stylists money, credibility, and opportunity.

Certification is not about ego. It’s about positioning.

Perception Is Reality

Clients don’t know how to evaluate technique—but they do know how to evaluate professionalism.

A certified natural hair stylist is perceived as:

  • More trustworthy

  • More skilled

  • More serious

  • More experienced

That perception alone increases your value.

Tonika's Truth

People don’t buy the best. They buy the most believable.

Certifications makes you believable.

Why I Chose Licensing and Certification Before It Was Popular

Fun fact: while I was learning natural hair and braiding, I also went to school for my cosmetology license.

I made that decision at 18 years old in the 1990s, long before natural hair was trendy, monetized, or widely respected. Even then, I knew one thing for sure—I wanted a career, not a side hustle.

At the time, many people viewed natural hair and braiding as informal work (Some still do in 2026). But I understood early that education and licensing would determine not just how I worked—but where I would be allowed to go.

Education Creates Access

Because I am licensed and certified, I am able to walk into rooms that many natural hair stylists and braiders simply cannot.

I’m able to:

  • Attend professional events closed to unlicensed stylists

  • Partner with major educational organizations

  • Secure brand deals based on my credentials and training

  • Operate legally across different states and environments

This level of access doesn’t come from talent alone. It comes from education and credentials.

Certification Is Not Optional in Many States

Some states require a braiding license or certification to legally operate. When you don’t have one, your career becomes limited—no matter how skilled you are.

That’s why I always say:Get the license so you can live the life you desire.

Education isn’t about checking a box—it’s about protecting your future.

Treating Hair Like a Career Changed My Life

When I opened my first natural hair salon in Washington, DC in the year 2000, I was a single parent.

But because I treated natural hair as a career—not a side hustle—I was able to build stability. I was able to create income. And most importantly, I was able to give my son special experiences that would not have it this was a side hustle.

We took vacations every single year.

That wasn’t luck. That was planning, professionalism, and positioning.
